Veteran racer Eric Curran finished his 2007 Grand-Am Koni Challenge racing season as an unsung hero, teaming with Jamie Holtom and helping him win the Drivers’ Championship in the Street Tuner class.
Along with that, their driving efforts over the season resulted in a Manufacturers’ Championship for Chevrolet, which built their turbocharged Chevrolet Cobalt SS, and the Team Championship for Mike Kuznicki’s Georgian Bay Motorsports group.
The pair finished third in the six-hour race on the 3.27-mile layout at VIRginia International Raceway, giving the 21-year old Holtom the championship by a 43-point margin over their nearest competitor.
“This has been my third season driving with Jamie,” said Curran, “and it has been a pleasure watching him mature as a driver and as a person. He and I have become good friends and great teammates over the years. He’s always been a sponge for information and has done an amazing job driving the Georgian Bay Cobalt. Jamie will always be a force to reckon with in any series he runs in.”
Since their debut as co-drivers in 2006’s season-opener at Daytona, Curran and Holtom have partnered in 27 races, winning nine of them. “That’s a .333 batting average in baseball, and great numbers for any team,” Curran added. “This year we debuted the turbocharged version of the Cobalt SS, and it has been a joy to drive. Georgian Bay and Mike Kuznicki brought a perfectly set up Cobalt to the track every time, and we appreciate the technical assistance by Dwight Woodbridge and his staff at General Motors Racing. “The Cobalt SS has been predictable every time out. You get in it in the first practice and you’re competitive with the field right away. Winning championships requires a fast and reliable race car and that’s exactly what Georgian Bay brought to every track this year. There are many more factors that determine whether or not you win, though. Teams from Acura, Honda and Subaru also won races, so this was no runaway season,” Curran noted. “There were 10 different car makes in the Street Tuner class at least once this year, and six manufacturers did the whole season,” Curran noted. “This makes the Manufacturers’ Championship trophy even more significant for GM. The individual Team Championship trophy by our #01 team is a great trophy for Georgian Bay. “I couldn’t be happier for Jamie and the Georgian Bay Motorsports team. They all did such a great job this year. It could not have gone better.” Holtom first put the #01 Cobalt into the lead on lap 31 of the season’s longest race, holding it for 13 laps. Curran got it back on top from laps 68 thru 75 before pitting, and again from laps 110-114. Holtom led again on lap 132. |
